MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Used cars and smaller, more efficient vehicles are selling like crazy because of rising gas prices.
FOX13 spent the day on several car lots. We found out it is causing some to get into a business they haven’t considered in the past.
One luxury car dealer in north Mississippi said that because of the market and because of gas prices, he has gotten into small, fuel-efficient cars.
“It has never been one of our niches. We buy two Hondas a week now, and we are selling them,” Rod Jones said.
Jones owns a high-end second-hand car dealership in Tunica County. His market has been cars like Mercedes and BMW, but lately, he has moved into the market of selling smaller, fuel-efficient cars because he noticed there was a market for them.
”We have been selling a lot of Kias and Hyundais and quite a few Toyotas and Hondas. We are spending more money on them, but the cars are giving people more value,” Jones said.
Two other dealerships we stopped at where the owners didn’t want to go on camera said that a lot of people are trading in their big SUVs for smaller rides to save on gas.
Jones said that the price of gas has also brought customers back to his lot to buy a second car they will likely drive even more than the luxury car they bought.
“Even if they can afford it, they are probably coming back for a second or third vehicle that is smaller and more economically feasible,” Jones said.
